Vagabundo Boat Fire Puerto Vallarta

Had quite a tragic event last night (July 13th, 2008). Having just arrived at Apache’s around 6:30 pm and 4 police vehicles, 3 ambulances and 2 bombero trucks sped down Francisco Rodriquez at end of Los Muertos Pier (down from Archie’s Wok).

Marco was sitting next to me and ran down there. You won’t believe it but the tour boat Vagabundo exploded in flames right past the Malecon heading south.

The Travel Hotspots of 2009

2009 already enjoys considerable hype as the year of the travel deal. Free flights to Phuket, dropping hotel rates — it’s a veritable boondoggle. If you’ve got the cash, there will be deals. But where shall you go? Here’s a brief list of up-and-coming hotspots for 2009 travel, and of course, we have a few choice words to add.

1. Riviera Nayarit – Just north of Puerto Vallarta, this stretch of sun and sand is busy launching itself as the next place to be. Since it’s up and coming, the area is a bit of a hodgepodge of activities; luckily, there’s something for everyone, whether you like golf, surf, or just plain old sun.

The fine print: Includes all taxes and fees. Based on double occupancy; no single bookings. Does not include airfare. Note that rates will go up about $120 per person during late December; rates also go up in March, but if you mention this article, you can book a March trip at the $1,250 price.

Mexican coast playground is truly a (snow)birders’ paradise

The newly branded and promoted Nayarit region also lures birders. Along on our trip, sponsored by the Mexican Tourist Board, was Laura Tangley of National Wildlife magazine in Washington, D.C., who thought she had died and gone to an avian heaven.

Tangley counted 33 different species of birds during our two-hour boat safari through the mangrove estuary in La Tovara National Park. The record is 280 species spotted during an eight-hour period during the annual bird-watching festival. The next festival will be held Jan. 19-26. So, birders, mark your calendars.
