Watching whales in winter
Monday found us back home in comparatively dreary Terrebonne, after a long weekend in balmy Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. We had traveled to that Pacific port hoping to view whales in their native habitat.
The same “humpbacks” which spend the summer feeding in the north Pacific waters off Alaska, visit Puerto Vallarta’s Banderas Bay every winter for mating and giving birth.
Whales aplenty: “It’s like whale soup out there,” said Oscar, our researcher guide before a dozen of us boarded a small boat to see for ourselves.

Sayulita: Mexico’s Surf City
This low-key village about 40 minutes north of bustling Puerto Vallarta doesn’t have sprawling beachfront hotels or rumbling discos where tourists do tequila shots out of each other’s navels.
Sayulita doesn’t have a bunch of four-star restaurants, chic boutiques or even paved streets. But the curved sandy beach, the lush jungle, the lines of warm surfer-friendly swells and the funky, open-air restaurants attract a lot of adventuresome people from the Northwest.
