Mexican Tourism: Beach Areas Down but Still Not Out

The squeeze is on. Up and down Mexico’s Pacific Coast tourist resorts are feeling the pinch of the world economic meltdown. In Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, signs of the downturn are literally everywhere. “For Sale,” “For Rent” and “Business Available” are ubiquitous messages emblazoned in Spanish and in English on storefronts, on apartment buildings, and on unfinished condominiums.

In January, the peak of the foreign tourism high season, local media reported hotel occupancy rates hovering around an anemic 60-65 percent nightly. One evening, the rate reportedly dropped to 36 percent.

Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta Race

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The sailing fleet of the decidedly low key race to Puerto Vallarta has arrived at the finish where Margaritas await. Since starting out from Marina Del Rey, California on January 31st, the boats have sailed 1,034 nautical miles (in 4 legs), to arrive in sunny PV, where they were greeted by cheers from family and friends.

David Kory’s Barking Spider, a Catalina 36 MK2, won the race in the Spinaker B class, while Dan Howard’s Carmagnole sailed in for a win in the Spinaker A class. However, the real star of this race was a classic wooden schooner. A beauty named Rose of Sharon, who stole the show in the last leg of the race, when she finished in first place (on corrected time) in the Spinaker B class. Even owner Byron Chamberlain was surprised by the performance of his 79-year-old boat on the last 286 mile leg. “I can’t believe we did that well,” said Chamberlain, who was particularly astonished by the results of the run from Baja California.
