Angels, devils and saints: Mexico’s most spirited festivals

December 2nd, 2009
I often stumble upon festivals through sheer serendipity while traveling around Mexico. The first encounter occurred during a solo week in Oaxaca in the 1980s. While sipping a beer at a sidewalk café one evening, I heard an astonishing clamor that brought me to my tiptoes. Devil faces were popping up over the hedges on the other side of the plaza. Drums, flutes and guitars played dueling harmonies.

Nayarit, to hold the Mexico Cup Regatta, Bicentennial edition

December 2nd, 2009

Nayarit will host the Mexico Cup Regatta, Bicentennial Edition, from 27 February to 13 March 2010, one of the tourism promotion events in Mexico and Nayarit that will have international coverage.

In a meeting with the governor of Nayarit, Ney González Sánchez, Tourism Secretary Rodolfo Elizondo Torres said the Copa Mexico is authorized by the President Felipe Calderón and will be held at the Riviera Nayarit.

Competition breeds connection to many consumers, especially the U.S. market and Canada. The contest will be divided into Oceanic class, and Optimis J24 class, for children.

Governor Ney Gonzalez Sanchez, accompanied by legislators Hilaria Arvizu and Manuel Domínguez Cota Jiménez said that "we do not aspire to be an event, we aspire to be the 2010 event, the event that put Mexico at the mouth of the world" with a song that gives the opportunity to strengthen our economy.

"I welcome this idea, the energy around this idea has been generated and, with respect, and with the certainty that the event will strengthen the brand Riviera Nayarit," said the State Executive and thanked the federal government, specifically to President Felipe Calderón, who has set his eyes on the Riviera Nayarit.

Madariaga Hospital will pass into private hands

December 2nd, 2009

Nora Dedieu-owner of ATE confirmed that the new hospital Ramón Madariaga will pass on to private hands and described the initiative as "a discriminatory attitude." Dedieu said ATE has long since denounced and debated the possibility that the new and "modern" hospital is privatized. Also said it will address only to social prepaid, as OSDE, MEDIF, among others, "not even going to accept the IPS,".

The owner of ATE said that before their grievances the government denied this project and with such conditions, "today we are seeing that we are not mistaken, the government will make this new hospital private, meaning that those most in need may not receive services from this facility, "he said.

Festival Gourmet 2009 – Our Taste

December 1st, 2009

Well, this year’s fifteenth Gourmet Festival, as always, offered us some new, delicious and interesting things. For starters, the opening night was held at the hotel Casa Velas and the setting was delightful, a lounge ambiance around the poolside that made you feel like you were in a new place, an unknown new venue.

Gourmet FestivalThere were other new items added, like the dinner safari, in which you had hors d’oeuvres at one spot, soup or salad at another; main course at still another location and dessert at yet one more of the leading Vallarta restaurants, so in one night you could get to know four of the best dining spots in town, one safari by van and another on foot, all arranged according to the geography of the tour..

But the one thing that truly got my attention was the Winemaker’s night. Because you got to meet a new special breed of people, the oenologists.

They are the scientists that know the land, the components of the soil, the altitude, the temperature and the timing and of seasons and rain. They know what grapes can be grown and where; how and when they ripen. They know when to harvest to the day, the time of day, or even the time of night.

Spending time with Bernhard Güth from Trío and Vitea restaurants as well as with Joaquín Prieto, producer of Vinos Tres Valles winery in the Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California, was an intense immersion course on wine making, wine tasting and food and wine pairing.

Gourmet Festival When I went with Bernhard and Joaquín on a degustation visit with the sommelier, chef and maitre d’y of the San Angel Hotel; a most charming and unique inn that really belongs in the very heart of Puerto Vallarta; as they went through the menus and chose the wines to go with them, the experience took me back in time to when I watched the movie “Amadeus” about Mozart. Antonio Salieri, his rival, was mesmerized by Mozart’s music, just by reading the sheet music he knew the beauty of it and the genius of Mozart without ever having heard it.
Being an amateur musician and wine lover I can only hope that these experiences will enable me to enter my next reincarnation with the benefit of a handicap on those intricate fields.

Ney met with leaders of the tourism sector

December 1st, 2009

The Governor Ney Gonzalez announced that the Nayarit Riviera Nayarit has allowed to become more competitive, achieving, among other things, the ability to serve youth who want to study high school and college, doubling, "in four years of being Governor; also has doubled the capacity to deal with clean water, public infrastructure without the infrastructure within the tourism development and has achieved the goal of zero surgical lag and zero medical consultation lag thanks to the plan that exists in the state and is being complied with fully.

He expressed his satisfaction "to come and talk about how to move the economy of our country," how to do so on terms which, as has been said here, were not we wanted, but certainly very valuable because they force us to grow, forcing us to learn, we are forced to ally forces, to recognize friends where we watched opponents before and no doubt, tourism has much to do yet because we have to understand tourism, in one form, has been done so far, but "Why not give us the opportunity to do also in a different way, since the challenges are different? "
